Fallopian Tube Recanalization

For a woman struggling to become pregnant, a fallopian tube occlusion may be the cause. This condition involves a buildup of mucus or debris that forms a plug in the fallopian tube. Fallopian tube recanalization can help.

Treatment

To treat a fallopian tube occlusion, a small guidewire is advanced through the fallopian tube to unblock the tube. Contrast dye is injected after the tube is inserted to ensure the blockage has been cleared. The procedure is usually done under sedation to ensure our patients’ comfort.

Benefits

For one-third of women, this procedure restores fertility. A small portion of patients experience re-blockage of the fallopian tubes and may require a repeat procedure in about a year. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine supports fallopian tube recanalization as an initial therapy versus other more invasive procedures.
