About the Independent IR Residency Program

Welcome to the Interventional Radiology Residency Program!  We are delighted to share with you our SIR Meet & Greet from November 2022.  In it, you will hear some highlights of the program from many of the attendees and current residents.  This was a great opportunity for Q&A of some of the important topics for applicants.  Also below that is the SIR Meet & Greet excerpt from November 2021 featuring 3 former fellows discussing their experiences in training and how it has shaped their careers.  We hope you enjoy the presentations!

Mission of Residency

The mission of the independent interventional radiology residency with Miami Vascular is to train residents to be the leaders in the field of vascular and interventional radiology and to prepare them to enter an interventional radiology practice with the highest level of clinical expertise. This is accomplished by providing a broad spectrum of complex cases in an urban clinical and academic environment and by emphasizing personalized compassionate and equally out-standing care to all ethnic, religious, gender, and socioeconomic groups.

Sponsored by the University of South Florida (USF) and accredited by the ACGME, our program has received approval for the following:

1.  Two Year Independent IR Residency
2.  One Year Independent IR Residency after Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR)

Aims of the Residency
  • To provide the highest quality education with a focus on developing future leaders while exceeding national standards for performing interventional radiology procedures in a wide gamut of categories.
  • To foster the highest professional and ethical standards for interventional radiology residents.
  • To promote scholarly research and instill a passion for innovation in interventional radiology.
  • To encourage collaboration and effective communication with a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  • To provide residents with the tools to deliver the best care to our diverse patients, while prioritizing optimal clinical care across a highly diversified healthcare system.
  • To uphold principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in our interventional radiology teams.
Why Do Your INDEPENDENT IR RESIDENCY WITH Miami Vascular?
  1. Your independent IR residency will be under a group of full-time interventional radiologists whose collective experience and knowledge will provide the highest level of training. In addition, you will have significant interaction with our vascular surgeons, oncologists, nephrologists, urologists, and other clinicians to solidify your clinical knowledge and experience.
  2. The program is fortunate to provide a very large volume of vascular and interventional material, including a robust exposure to peripheral vascular disease.  Miami Vascular has long been recognized as a center of excellence for peripheral vascular disease and aneurysm therapy with significant research in these areas.
  3. In addition to the extensive experience in vascular disease, you will have an outstanding experience in interventional oncology with patients from Miami Cancer Institute.  Miami Cancer Institute is a member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance, a dynamic and forward-thinking collaboration aimed at improving patient access to the latest and most effective cancer treatment advances and the highest caliber of cancer care.  We are course directors of the annual Symposium on Clinical Interventional Oncology (CIO). You will participate in this conference and attend high-level lectures by world-class experts in the field. We have a robust radioembolization program (with both Sirsphere [resin] and Therasphere [glass]), a tumor ablation program (using radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, microwave ablation, and irreversible electroporation [IRE] and pulsed electrical field [PEF]), and chemoembolization program. You will also participate in biliary interventions for malignancy and pre-op portal vein embolization. You will leave here with a solid experience in both peripheral vascular disease and interventional oncology, which is not commonly seen in many other independent IR residency programs.
  4. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredits this program. It is a specialty interventional radiology training program sponsored by the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. The successful completion of this program will qualify you to sit for the American Board of Radiology’s Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology Board Exam.
  5. The Miami Vascular independent IR residency prepares you for any type of career that you desire. Graduates have become renowned physicians in academics and research as well as leaders in community hospitals and outpatient centers.
  6. You will acquire more patient management skills in this independent IR residency than in any other in the country.
  7. There is ample opportunity for you to participate actively in research. We have over twenty ongoing clinical research trials involving aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, interventional oncology, spine interventions, and neurovascular disease. Click here for our ongoing research trials.
  8. You will attend and perform live cases for the annual ISET meeting (International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy) and CIO meeting (Symposium on Clinical Interventional Oncology). In addition, if selected as a resident, you will have the opportunity to attend the ISET meeting the year prior to your training.
  9. We have one of the best facilities in the world in which you will serve in your training.  It has been recently renovated and undergone a state of the art expansion.
IR Independent Residency Positions
  • Seven ACGME accredited independent IR residency positions are available each year.  We accept 2-year independent residents and ESIR residents who will complete a final year of training.
